Final Fantasy V - The Spirit of Heroes

World 2: Big Bridge

Big Bridge

Be prepared to fight several battles once you step onto the bridge to the west of Exdeath’s Castle. None of the ensuing battles are difficult, but the catch is you can’t run from them. You fight in a linear progression at just about each turret. None of these monsters carries anything to steal, so don’t even bother dreaming of plunder. If you decided to go back to heal or save be forewarned. You will have to fight all of the nasty critters again.

In the middle of the bridge you will see a guardhouse. Be prepared for battle when you enter Gilgamesh awaits once again.

hp: 6,500Boss Battle: Gilgamesh

GilgameshThis fight with the nefarious Gilgamesh is more diverse than the previous hack and slash fight. If you’ve been lax about your blue magic you can learn two spells you should already have: Goblin Punch and Aera. Gilgamesh also likes to cast the familiar Wind Slash spell, which averages out to 175 points of damage to all party members. He occasionally casts Electrocute to a single target, but this bolt only does about 60 points of damage. He favors pummeling the heroes. Those in the front row should have enough hp to withstand about 250 points of damage in a single blow. Those defending, or in the back row can enjoy a lesser backhand of about 115 points of damage.

Midway through the battle Gilgamesh attempts to cast Haste, Shell, and Protect. You can mute him beforehand (I wielded the Mage Masher with my thief and it did the trick) effectively disabling his underhanded tactics. After casting those spells he Jumps on a single party member for about 400 points of damage.

Once again you don’t get to finish this fight. Get used to it. You see Gilgamesh many more times. Consequently you don’t receive exp, abp or Gil. The only prize you may score is either a Hero Cocktail or Trident if you steal. Be patient. Genji items will follow.

Don’t think that just because Gilgamesh ran off you’re in the clear. Several henchmen await you on the last stretch of the bridge. This batch now includes Neo Garula, but he’s not harder than the other monsters, he just has a few more hp.

A fool proof way to defeat Gilgamesh both times is with the samuries. Its quite pricy but it gets the job done (I had almost 10K when I killed him so it didn't really make a dent in my funds)
