Final Fantasy V - The Spirit of Heroes

World 1: Sand Tides Desert

Sand Tides Desert

Cid and Mid told you the next destination lies beyond the Desert of Shifting Sands. People saw King Tycoon floating off toward the desert. How do you enter the roiling sands? Try to cross into the tides. When you do Cid and Mid show up with a violent plan to get you into the desert. They want to call a Sandworm for you to kill. They theorize that it will die and create a bridge to cross into the desert. Nobody said it was a pretty plan. You have time to prepare for the battle should you need it. You really don’t need much preparation. For an easy battle make sure you have someone with Aqua Breath and a healer, or Time Mage to cast Regen.

hp: 3,000Boss Battle: Sandworm

the large angry SandwormHe may look large and mean, but the Sandworm can easily be dispatched. He doesn’t technically have any weaknesses, but one well-cast Aqua Breath will send him to a soggy grave. You may think Aqua Breath would be a bad idea because Mid warned you against using magic. Ordinarily magic is inappropriate for this battle because the Holes counterattack with Gravity. Aqua Breath causes so much damage though that it kills the worm and the holes before they can even think of casting their naughty spells on you.

So what can you do if you don’t have Aqua Breath? Water Scrolls work efficiently inflicting around 2,000 points of damage. Otherwise inflict your favorite type of physical damage until Sandworm dies creating a bridge for you (I don’t even want to think about walking over a giant worm body. Eww.)

The worm only has two attacks. He uses the standard physical attack and Quicksand. Quicksand can be nasty. Initially it inflicts 60 points of damage. The nasty part of the attack is that it causes your hp to drain. If you’re worried about losing too many hp you can cast Regen on your party. Or just keep a healer on standby.

One of the more irritating things about the battle is that the sandworm constantly switches holes. He pops in and out of them like he’s playing peek-a-boo. If you accidentally hit one of the Holes instead of the sandworm you get struck with Gravity. So, take care with your aim.

A Trek Through the Sands

After that messy worm battle, you get to start your journey through the desert. This can be an easy trip, or a long hard one. If you want the easy trip step directly south into the current from the end of the Sandworm bridge—you always want to be heading in a southerly direction. From your next stop, venture south into the current again. This sand dune is larger than the others. Take the long current on the south side. Walk to the left and ride the double current to the south. You should spot a cluster of cacti when you land. That welcoming cluster of vegetation is your ticket out of the desert. Now all you have to do is reach it. Walk left and then to the southern tip of the sand dune. Walk right into the current and voila, you’ve reached the exit.

Before leaving you might want to engage in a few random encounters. You can steal a Javelin from the Sand Bear. It is difficult to steal though, but with an atk of 52, well worth it at this stage of the game. I recommend using a time mage to Regen everyone and cast Haste on your thief or thieves.

If you make a wrong turn somewhere in the sand maze, you may notice a wavy pyramid structure in the center of the map. Unfortunately, if you take the time to investigate the pyramid, you will end your trek in front of a locked door. Much later in the game you return to the Pyramid and sate your curiosity.

The toad song blue magic spell is very effective against the sand bear. In toad form all of his attacks are reduced to 0 dmg.

Good way to get the Javelin's is to have a trainer control the bear and then have a time mage haste your thief(s), slow/stop the bear then regan someone who will take hits from the bear because if you make the bear attack himself he uncontrols and eventually kills himself
